Basic Submission Guidelines

  • Only original manuscripts will be considered for publication.
  • All manuscripts and supporting materials must be submitted through the web-based system Editorial Manager™ ( Please do not mail or fax any documents.


Authorship Requirements

AOCD Residents: All manuscripts submitted by AOCD residents must have been reviewed, critiqued, and approved by their Program Directors. The Program Director Approval Form must be filled out and included with your submission (see below). You may list your Program Director on your title page as a co-author. If your Program Director is not listed as a co-author, you must co-author with at least one other AOBD or ABD board-certified dermatologist.

All Others: All medical students, interns, non-dermatology residents, and allopathic dermatology residents must co-author their manuscripts with an AOBD or ABD board-certified dermatologist.


Required Forms

On forms requiring signatures from all authors, electronic signatures are acceptable. Forms should be scanned and uploaded to Editorial Manager.

    The JAOCD requires all authors to acknowledge any and all funding sources that supported their work as well as all institutional support or financial interests. These include consultant arrangements, stock or other equity ownership, patent licensing arrangements, or payments for conducting or publicizing the study. In addition, authors are required to disclose similar associations with companies that make a competing product. The editors also require each reviewer to disclose any competing interests.

    Each author must be in compliance with the Copyright Act of 1976. The following statement will be signed by each contributing author:

    "I, the undersigned author, transfer all copyright ownership of the manuscript referenced above to the JAOCD of the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology in the event the work is published. I warrant the article's originality and that it does not infringe upon any copyright or other proprietary right of any third party, is not under consideration by another journal, and has not been published previously. I have reviewed and approve the submitted version of the manuscript and agree to its publication in the Journal of the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology."

Manuscript Preparation

  • All materials must be typewritten in Microsoft Word. Do not upload PDF files (with the exception of the Required Forms).
  • Activate "Normal" formatting only.
  • Activate line numbers (Page Layout/Line Numbers/Continuous).
  • Do not use end notes or footnotes for referencing. Use superscripted numbers when citing parts of text (these almost always go at the end of the sentence, and always go outside the punctuation mark), and create a numbered list of references at the end of the article.
  • Manuscripts with special formatting like columns, hard breaks, end notes, footnotes, or page numbers will be sent back for revision.
  • Include all photographs and tables as separate files. Tables should be created as Word documents. Images should be uploaded in their original file formats (.gif, .jpg, etc.), and in the largest file sizes available. Indicate in the text where each image belongs.
  • Case studies must include at least one clinical photo, and, if applicable, at least one histology photo.
  • All submissions must include two (2) quiz questions with answers and references (download quiz form).


Manuscript Structure

Scholarly articles typically follow the IMRaD structure: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. This structure is most directly applicable to experiment-based science, but applies in to all journal articles in a general way.

All articles submitted to the JAOCD must include the following sections:

  • Abstract (not exceeding 150 words, included in the manuscript body)
  • Introduction
  • Article-specific section(s)
  • Discussion
  • Conclusion
  • References

You may include additional sections; these are only the minimum requirements.

Article-specific section(s)
In a case report, the article-specific section(s) would be the report of the case, including presentation, differential, testing, diagnosis, treatment, etc. For all other articles, the content between the Introduction and Discussion varies widely based on article type and topic.

We highly recommended potential authors brush up on the purpose of the Introduction section, the misunderstanding of which regularly results in papers being returned upon submission.


Illustrations, Photos, Tables

Illustrations, tables, pictures, figures, and legends should be submitted at the same time as the manuscript. Captions must be in Word document format, not part of the picture file.

All images should be:

  • Submitted in original TIFF, GIF or JPEG format, not pasted into a Word document
  • Submitted in the largest file size available.

All tables should be created in Microsoft Word and submitted as a Word document.


  • Recognizable photographs of patients must have the patient's consent and be accompanied by an Informed Consent form (download here).
  • If you submit a case report without a clinical photo, it will be sent back to you
  • If you submit a case report that reports histopathology assessment and you do not provide a histopathology photo, it will be sent back to you.


Title Page Guidelines

On the title page, list the article title on the first line; each author's full name and highest earned academic degrees on the second line; and then on subsequent lines, each author’s position, institutional affiliation(s), and location, listed separately. See examples below.

Lead author: If the first listed author is a resident, the submission requires a Program Director Approval Form, regardless of whether that lead author is the correspondent.

Corresponding author: Designate one author as correspondent, and provide an address, telephone number, fax number, and E-mail address. This information will be published with the manuscript. (If you would like to provide different information for use by the JAOCD editors, not published in the journal, you should enter those contacts during the registration process at Editorial Manager. That is where we look when we need to contact you.)

Referencing Guidelines

References must be identified in the text by superscript Arabic numerals in order of their mention. (Reminder: The superscript goes outside the punctuation mark.) The reference list should include all reference in the order in which they appear in the manuscript.

Use ONLY NLM citation format for references (full info: Papers will be sent back for revision if the citation format is not in proper NLM style.


Style Notes

  • Authors must adhere to acceptable English usage. GRAMMAR COUNTS.
  • Please perform a spell check before submitting the paper.
  • Generic medication names should be used. (When a trade name MUST be used for some reason, it should be followed by the generic name in parentheses the first time it is mentioned).
  • Citation numbers almost always go at the end of a sentence, and always go outside the punctuation mark.


Review Procedure

The author of the manuscript should expect revisions as the manuscript goes through the review process. Authors will be notified when a review is completed. The manuscript will either be accepted for publication, or a revision will be required.

A request for publication does not guarantee that the manuscript will be published. The final editorial decision rests on the quality of the manuscript, adherence to revision deadlines, editors' judgment, degree of readership interest, and availability of space in the journal. The review process can take up to two months; please do not inquire about your manuscript status until two months after submission.



Each manuscript is looked at by three reviewers. This means you may receive up to three separate revision requests to address as your manuscript moves through the editorial process.

All revisions should be made with "Track Changes" turned on. They should be submitted in marked-up form so that reviewers can see exactly which changes were made.
